| | | San Michele is the island cemetery of Venice, still in use today. It can be reached from Venice historical centre by the same water bus going to Murano Island.
At a glance, the surrounding imposing walls give the island a mysterious appearance. After disembarking, you enter the cemetery and pass by very old and timeworn tombs, while heading for the central part of the island. The prevailing colours are sombre, grey and dark green, and they accompany you up to a wide open, stunning area full of lush vegetation and bright-coloured blooms. Walking around this large garden, among new and old tombs, passing through well kept or completely abandoned areas, you can see and admire all sorts of decorations, from the most artistic to the plainest, from small gravestones to family mausoleums. Many famous foreign residents were buried on the island, including Sergej Djagilev (1872-1929), Igor Stravinskij (1882-1971), Ezra Pound (1885-1972). Recently, the Venetian painter Emilio Vedova (1919-2006) found the eternal rest in this garden on the water.
