| | | A walk in an unusual setting, on an island with a lonely and mildly neglected undertone. Sant’Erasmo does not offer the vibrating vitality and the chromatic and human richness of other islands in the northern part of the Lagoon. Sant’Erasmo is the reign of silence, of rarefied and out of time atmospheres, forgotten by the noisy mechanisms of an intrusive modernity. After years of progressive abandon and decay, this green island of vegetable gardens and vineyards has recovered its most important monument as, after a full restoration, the old Torre Massimiliana (Maximilian Tower), dominating the small beach named “del bacàn” , where Venice people use to go for daily trips and a swim, is no longer a relics of the Austrian military architecture (XIX century) but an imposive presence giving new life to the old area along the “line of fire” that once protected the Lagoon.
From the strip of sand devoted to the sunbathing f the local families, it is possible to admire the powerful Tower living in the landscape and changing colours as the hours go by : reddening at dawn and sunset as a sign of the new life that made it available to the islanders and their visitors, a place for meeting and for recalling a human and historic past.
From April to September, the bycicles can be taken to the islands by the Actv public boats thanks to the initiative “Bicinbarca” (BikeOnBoard) . There is a motor vessel sailing from San Giuliano (in the outskirts of Mestre) to Sant’Erasmo and the Lido and a car ferry from Tronchetto to the Lido and Punta Sabbioni. In Sant’Erasmo it is also possible to rent bicycles for a tour of the island. For information, contact “Cooperativa Lato Azzurro”, near the wharf, tel. (+39) 041.5230642. | | |
